Mid-Summers Day, St. Hansaften

Tue, 23-Jun-2009

The Norway Post - Doorway to Norway
Midsummer celebrations in Norway

Tonight, the evening of June 23rd is celebrated as Midsummernight Eve in Norway, also known as 'St.Hans Aften' or 'Jonsok-kveld', depending on where you are in the country.
Huge bonfires are burned as part of the celebrations.
St. Hans or Jonsok both reveal that the festival has been named after St. John the Baptist, as the 24th is his birthday according to the Festival Calendar of the pre-reformation Church.
As with so many of the church festivals, it was introduced in order to replace an old heathen festival on that same date, thought to be the Summer Solstice, or the longest day of the year.
In Norway, the evening is celebrated with partying, good food, music and dancing, and the burning of huge bonfires.
The burning of bonfires has of course survived from heathen times, when it was believed that the fire had special cleansing powers, and was also used to drive away evil powers, witches included.
Medical herbs also had special powers at Midsummernight, and so did water.
Dew that fell on that night was believed to have healing properties, particularly for ailments of the eyes.
Midsummernight Eve was a public holiday in Norway until 1771, and has as a matter of fact survived as a day off in several communities to this day.

St. Hans: Eat Your Porridge and Light Your Fire

St. Hansaften is the ultimate summer feast in Norway.

On the evening of June 23, Norwegians light bonfires, pick flowers to put under their pillows, and celebrate summer and light.

11/17/2008 :: The St. Hans celebrations have roots across northern Europe, and were also brought to Canada with the first French colonialists...

The celebrations take on somewhat different forms in the different countries, but the origins are much the same. St. Hans is a Christian holiday to honor Saint John the Baptist (also called Saint Hans).

The day of celebration was set to June 24 to outdo the pagan celebrations of midsummer or summer solstice. However, it is the celebration of summer, sun, and light that has survived in countries such as Norway.

In Norway, celebrations take place the evening before June 24. Aften, as in St. Hansaften, means evening.
The tradition of lighting bonfires on this occasion came from the pagan belief in fire as the protector against evil spirits.

The sun, which in the Northern hemisphere is at its highest at midsummer, probably inspired this belief.

The night of St. Hans was supposedly a night of magic.
If, for instance, a young girl picked seven flowers and put them under her pillow, she would dream of her future husband...

When asked what she associates with St. Hansaften, Ingeborg Nygaard, the chef at the Norwegian Embassy, said: “bonfire, rømmegrøt (sour cream porridge), cured ham, barbeque, midsummer, sun, family, friends, children, and my childhood.

On St. Hansaften I get together with my family and friends and go to a field to make a bonfire. We bring sour cream porridge, cured ham, barbeque food like sausages, and just have a good time for as long as we can stay awake...

When I was little I was very superstitious.

I made sure to jump seven fences and pick seven different flowers, put them under my pillow, and try hard to dream about a boy I liked.”
“Why we eat sour cream porridge on this day? Well, it is a tradition. Eating sour cream porridge on special holidays is a strong tradition in Norway, and St. Hans is a special holiday...

Rømmegrøt (Sour Cream Porridge)Often served with cured meats and flatbrød (crisp bread)

This recipe serves 4

Ingredients

1 pint thick sour cream
12 tablespoons flour
1 pint milk
Salt

Preparation

1. Boil the sour cream, covered, for 2 minutes.
Add half of the flour and stir carefully to bring the butter to the surface.
Skim it off, reserve it and keep it warm.

2. Stir in the rest of the flour and add the milk.
Simmer the porridge for 5-6 minutes.
Season to taste with salt.

If one prefers a slightly tangy sour flavor, half of the milk added may be sour milk or kefir.
Sour cream porridge is eaten sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon and with the reserved warm melted butter.

Some people also like to add raisins on top, as pictured above.

Red juice, such as raspberry or currant, is usually served with the porridge.

Nemi - Norwegian Comic Strip

Nemi: "So you don't think playing 'hard to get' will work after this?"

!

Nemi is a Norwegian comic strip, written and drawn by Lise Myhre.

It made its first appearance in 1997 under the title Den svarte siden ("the Black Side" or "the Black Page").

At that time it was a very dark cartoon about the Heavy and Dark metal subcultures, but Myhre has turned it brighter with the years, although she still frequently publishes strips about serious issues, especially in the larger Saturday panels.
The strip is now named Nemi, after the protagonist, and is the second most popular comic strip in Norway, behind Pondus...

!
Main characters

Nemi Montoya
A woman about 25 years old, Nemi always wears black clothes, has very pale skin, and very little in common with most of the rest of the world.
She was named after Lake Nemi and Inigo Montoya, a character in Lise Myhre's favourite film, The Princess Bride.
It underlines Nemi's "outsider" status within Norwegian society and suggests that she may not be a natural brunette...

!
Character

Nemi is a "tough girl" with an attitude, is not afraid to speak her mind and more often than not in confrontational ways: blunt rejections of would-be one-night stands at the pub are not uncommon.
At the same time, she can be very sensitive: she is apparently incapable of killing anything, including spiders, of which she is very fond.
She can also feel very alone at times.
She is afraid of growing up, and loathes blonde bimbos...
Her fear of growing up is reflected in her appeal to readers through her child-like qualities and innocence, as well as her sense of fun.

!
Lifestyle

She listens to heavy metal music, and has a number of friends in those subcultures who dress likewise.
She is often unemployed or employed in temporary jobs, where she often gets fired for her temper (such as beating a customer who asked for a CD of Christina Aguilera for her daughter, instead of the Alice Cooper CD Nemi had suggested).
She is fond of vacationing in warmer countries, but when at the beach she uses top-grade sunblock cream to avoid tanning, which would severely damage her carefully-cultivated surface image.
Nemi suffers from strong allergic reactions and has advocated exterminating birch trees, on the grounds that "we kill off thousands of species every day anyway". **
She likes to visit the pub, often with her friend Cyan*, where she often gets drunk.
Alcoholism is however not a main theme of the comic...
Nemi's apartment is almost always a mess, and she has an uncontrollable passion for chocolate
!

*Cyan means blue or blue/green & of course she has blue hair...
** "exterminating birch trees" - due to strong allergic reactions - this is why I like her, I can relate...because it's happened to me this year & can't imagine living here in Norway with a seasonal allergy every time these trees (all over the countryside mind you) happen to bloom--can I be gone the whole time of their pollen season next year?! hmmm...hope so?! :o(
!

Published in newspapers, every day or 2nd day (for translation...)
And then in a monthly comic book...
Album Series is in Books by Titan Books: Nemi 2007, Nemi I 2008, Nemi II 2009

The Norwegians Prove Themselves in Memphis

"Last year at about this time, I had a belly full of brisket, still smelled of smoke and was rushing back to the District to put the finishing touches on my story about three international teams competing in the Memphis in May barbecue contest, the so-called Super Bowl of Swine.

The weekend was a blast: Besides the heavenly aromas and flavors, imagine men dressed in pig drag, ice coolers turned into motorized transport, and more punny team names than you can shake a pork rib at. Despite the frivolity, it's a lot of work, and the global teams' hopes for 'que glory were dashed when the none of their names were called out from the stage come awards time.

Only one of the three returned this year: 100 Degrees Celsius, under the leadership of Okie-turned-Norwegian Craig Whitson, known in his country as Grillkongen (Grill King) Craig.

What a difference a year makes.

In its third appearance in Memphis this past weekend, the team took home two second-place trophies, both in "anything but" (i.e., anything but pork) categories. That's after a single third-place trophy in 2007 and squat in 2008.

100 Degrees Celsius, named for the team's preferred sweet-spot temperature of low-and-slow barbecue (212 degrees Fahrenheit), again worked on a tricked-out smoker dubbed Bling-Bling by its acclaimed maker, David Klose of Houston....

100 Degrees Celsius was one of just two international teams this year. "I think the economy had something to do with it," Whitson said. The other, the Danish National BBQ Team (which Whitson coached), took home a trophy, too, for third place in the beef category. The team, sponsored by Weber, cooked everything on Weber equipment available at any Home Depot, said Jim Boland of Memphis, who worked with both teams..."

(I've asked someone on Facebook who speaks Danish to please translate for us so we can know just how funny it really is?!)

Anthony Gormley
1950 - British
UK, India, Sri Lanka
Sculpture, installations
London, Tate Collection
$145,600 in 2004 - Quantum Cloud XIV (sculpture)

He is an artist of increasing stature who has never been afraid to go against the grain of fashion.
His characteristically (but not exclusively) life-size human figures have no specific features & are made of metal, visibly soldered together in static poses. The are casts of the artist's own body. He is wrapped in clingfilm, then clothe, then coated with wet plaster, which dries.
He is then cut out of the resulting mould, which is reassembled, & lead or other maetal is pressed into the void, or beaten to take his form, & the pieces are welded together.
Gormley studies Buddhism in India, & there can be little doubt that he is an artist trying to say something (in which he may or may not succeed) rather than to play to a market.
His 20-metre (65-ft) - high Angel of the North dominates the main A1 road on the approach to Tyneside.
Key Works: Bed, 1980-81 (London: Tate Collection)
Three Ways: Mould, Hole, and Passage 1981 (London: Tate Collection)
Untitled (Man Falling) 1985 (Private Collection)
Maquette for Leeds Brick Man 1986 (Leeds: City Art Gallery)

Photo insert: Angel of the North
Anthony Gromley, 1997-98, height 20 meters (65 ft), steel sculpture, Gateshead (UK)
The work has a poetic significance as a memorial to the area's now defunct coal mining industry.
