Moods of Norway

Moods of Norway
Welcome to the super interactive web shop created and run by our fantastic grandmother.

After her 976th birthday our grandmother discovered the beauty of the world wide web and the wonders of the modern day computers. After a super quick crash course by her grandchildren, an elegant web shop was launched to the sounds of barry white, bert baccharac, and three generations of Chippendale dancers.

The shop is as smooth as silk and as trustworthy as grandma herself. At the moment our grandmother is serving the shop by herself, but in the near future the Chippendales are joining her to bring the web shop to the peak of global domination

Moods of Norway
by Robert D. Austin, Shannon O'Donnell, Dorte Krogh

20 pages. Publication date: Jun 22, 2009.

Describes a young fashion company competing in a variety of unconventional ways, many "experience economy" related. Moods fronts their brand with the "boy band" images of its three founders and designs eccentric features into their clothes as a way of gaining mindshare among customers even though they cannot spend on marketing the way their competitors do. The case invites students to explore an unusual business model in both concept and execution.

Elle's Gluten Free Kitchen

Blogger Spotlight:
Elle Hermansen & her Gluten-Free Norwegian Pancakes! (Crêpes)
by Jay on August 4, 2009

There are numerous gluten-free pancake mixes around – I’ve tried most, but unfortunately, they don’t seem to satisfy. They always seem to end up really heavy on my stomach and dry. Also – I have lactose allergy, and the mixes might be low in gluten, but they’re high in lactose!

I finally decided to use an old simple recipe for regular pancakes, substitute some ingredients – and try my hand at making it lighter and still tasty. A lot of us gluten-free folk cannot handle a lot of milk – I don’t think I’m alone – so this recipe is lactose-free as well.

This is a Norwegian recipe – and pancakes around here are neither thick nor fluffy; they are more like French crêpes. Which I actually prefer! Mmmmm! Norwegians take pride in making the pancakes as thin as possible.
As you can see I fried up some bacon (wish it was Canadian!), because it gives you the option to roll it up in the pancake/crêpe. I usually end up eating the bacon on the side because I thoroughly enjoy eating mine with Nutella. Inspired by the Parisian street food!

I am eating it with Nugatti in (Norwegian Nutella-wannabe…it’s ok). Also, no pancake is complete without Canadian maple syrup! Make sure you purchase a malt-free kind. This Winnetou 100% pure natural maple syrup doesn’t seem to affect my tummy.

What you want to do is make sure you have the following simple ingredients. There are only four and it is the easiest recipe ever. My cat Beatrix enjoys making these for me on Sunday mornings

You’ll need;

3dl/10oz Gluten-free flour: I personally like this kind the best because it’s a mixture of corn, rice and potato flour. You could even mix your own concoction at your nearest bulk foods store.

5dl/17oz Lactose-free milk: You can substitute for regular milk if you are a champ! Either way it’s great! What I use isn’t actually lactose-free, it’s lactose-reduced, but my tummy says it’s ok ?

½ teaspoon Salt

4 medium sized eggs (free-range – let them chicks run around a little).

… and this is how you do it;

First – mix the flour and the salt in a bowl with half the milk. Use a hand- or stand-mixer for the job. As soon as it’s properly mixed – add the rest of the milk and crank the mixer up once more.

Crack the eggs in a separate bowl and add them all to the mix once you’re happy the free-range hens have delivered quality wares. Run the mixer for a while to mix it all up good and get a little froth on it.

When you’re satisfied – get out your favourite timer and set it/him/her (in my case) to 15 minutes. Your mixture needs some time to age proper

Once it’s time to cook, make sure your pan is good and hot. Add some margarine to it, then strike a pose and pour from the bowl, into whichever corner from which your house is tilted (mine goes to the left!). As soon as it has settled a little – use a spatula to spread the uncooked, top part of the mix so that it covers the whole pan.

Now – it’s a regular pancake – get your spatula under it – flip it – and serve! Put the bacon, Nutella and syrup on the table and invite the neighbours! It doesn’t matter if they’re not allergic; the pancakes are just THAT good!

Keiko buried in Halsa, Norway

Photo of Keiko's gravesite memorial in Taknes Bay,

http://www.panoramio.com/photo/5990050

Keiko (many know him from Free Willy) is buried in Halsa, Norway
North of Kristiansund in Vagland region (Nordemoere - Central Norway)
After living in Taknesfjord/bay from Sept 2002 to Dec 2003

3 Articles in Norwegian newspaper at the time:
http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article690508.ece

http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article691549.ece

http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article691382.ece

Copy of first article:
Norway mourns loss of Keiko
Pneumonia is being listed as the most likely cause of death for celebrity whale Keiko, who made Norway his home late last summer after surfacing in a western fjord. Local officials are calling Keiko's sudden demise "downright sad."
AVNINA BERGLUND

Keiko's minders noticed that he seemed ill on Thursday and stopped eating. He was found dead Friday evening after exhibiting signs that he was having trouble breathing.

"I think this is downright sad," Margrethe Saether, mayor of the local township of Halsa, told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) on Saturday. "It is, at any rate, what we'd call a natural death. He initially seemed to have a cold, but when he was checked after darkness fell Friday, he was lying dead at the pier."

Officials cordoned off the area at Taknes Bay in Nordmoere, not far from Kristiansund, to keep the media and public away from Keiko's corpse. They said Keiko would either be brought up on land or towed out to open sea and slaughtered.

Keiko was thought to be in his mid-20s and had spent a quiet summer swimming around in the bay where he'd been relocated late last year. The move was made in an effort to protect him from the thousands of human well-wishers who flocked to the area to get a glimpse of him.

The bay is also known for attracting other wild orcas, and Keiko's minders from the Free Willy-Keiko Foundation had kept hoping he'd join up with them and return to the wild himself. After a lifetime in captivity, however, the whale who sprang to international fame in the movie "Free Willy" never showed any interest in being on his own.

Saether noted that Keiko was without a doubt her township's biggest celebrity. His death will likely stem the sudden surge of tourists who traveled to the remote area on Norway's northwestern coast to see him.

Keiko was initially captured off Iceland in 1979. He then spent years in various aquatic parks in North America before being moved back to Iceland in an effort to return him to the wild. He was released from an Icelandic fjord in the summer of 2002 and swam to Norway on his own, only to resurface off a local village and immediately attach himself to local residents who swam and fished in the area.

His antics proved an immediate tourist draw, prompting those who'd been working with him for years to move him to Taknes. They continued to care for him after attempts to reunite him with wild orcas failed, and last summer he was being fed as much as 40 kilos of herring every day.

Geotourist landscape hotel

HOTEL JUVET™

At the farmstead of Burtigard, Alstad, in Norddal municipality, a tourism enterprise has been established that is quite out-of-the-ordinary; a landscape hotel that offers a short-stay holiday concept based on geotourism.

The landscape hotel is comprised of the farmhouse, the barn, and initially up to ten detached hotel rooms that have been sited separately in practically virgin scenery. Each room has its own unique view of this craggy Norwegian landscape: the farmstead, river, valley, mountains or the ravine. The rooms are of modern design that blend into the landscape, creating a harmonious marriage where Nature and modern design bring out the best in each other.

In the high season our guests are offered a five-day stay that is crowned with activities and experiences organised in the Western Norwegian fjord landscape. Professional hosts take care of guests’ needs, accompany them on trips, prepare their food and inform them about the landscape, culture, geology and history of the area. In this way, guests depart from there with a distinct feeling that they really have experienced a bit of Norway.

Outside the summer season the landscape hotel holds theme stays, and directs its marketing at companies and organisations. Weekends are largely set up for weddings, birthday celebrations, family gatherings, mystery trips etc.

The farm is situated by Gudbrandsjuvet (Gudbrand’s ravine), which is the most popular natural attraction on the road between Trollstigen and Geiranger. This stretch of road is soon to be accorded status as a National Tourist Route. The hotel concept, due to open in 2008, is a result of a co-operation between the National Tourist Routes association, architect firm Jensen and Skodvin (JSA) and landowner Knut Slinning.

A bird's eye view of puffins in Norway

It’s 5.45pm on a remote Norwegian island. Time for the puffins to arrive, says Caroline Hendrie

In the far north of Norway legend has it that on the same day each year, at 5.45pm precisely, puffins — hundreds of thousands of them — return to their breeding ground, a steep craggy island off the fishing hamlet of Gjesvaer.

Last year they were 25 minutes late, so just in case they were early this year, there we were, a crowd of locals and tourists, binoculars pointed out to sea and necks craned for the first siting...

Read more of the article at the following link...

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel/holiday_type/cruises/article721210.ece

Need to know:

Caroline Hendrie travelled with Norwegian Coastal Voyage (...www.hurtigruten.co.uk).

A six- night voyage north, leaving Bergen between July 25 and August 29, costs...
including full board, flights and transfers.

The bird-watching excursion to Gjesvaer costs...

When to go: From now until September — the puffins are particularly visible until mid-July.

Next year’s Return of the Puffins escorted tour, with an onboard ornithologist, leaves on April 9, 2007. (Note when article was written in 2006)

The cost...per person, includes the six-night voyage, one night’s half board at a hotel in Honningsvag, onboard lectures, Gjesvaer bird-watching trip, North Cape excursion, flights and transfers.

Rost Travel Guide:

Bird Nesting Colonies
The steep and towering islands southwest of the populated island of Røstlandet, are "home" for the largest number of nesting birds in all of Norway, - with approximately one fourth of the country´s seabird population. A "census" taken in 1992 shows a population of 2,5 million adults birds.
During the summer, there are daily boat trips to the nesting colonies. On the island of Vedøya, you can see the remnants of early settlement, showing that the island was probably an old fishing and hunting station. Bird lovers and researchers, both at home and abroad, regularly visit these ornithologically important islands. Moreover, a book about the birds on Røst has been published in Norwegian, English, German and French.

Rogafest Valuen Beach

The whole Rick Astley takes Rogafest

PRESS RELEASE:

Saturday 27. June takes even Rick Astley Vaulen with Hitparade of the rare.
Unlike many of their colleagues from the 80's that still appears on the clubs around Europe, have Rick Astley in recent years been a reincarnation of the rare.
Before he takes Vaulen Saturday 27.
June, headlines Rick concerts in the biggest arenas in the UK, including Wembley, Machester Arena, Liverpool Echo Arena and Birmingham NEC.
Rick Astley has during his career sold over 40 million records, and in 1987 he topped the list VG in Norway, with a monster hitter "Never gonna give you up".
Same song topped charts in 16 countries, including the United States and England.
Song was the best selling single in England that year.
In a few years Rick Astley spat out 13 top 30 singles, including songs like "She wants to dance with me", "Whenever you need somebody," "My arms keep missing you", ”Don`t say goodbye”, and "Together forever".
The latter, also topped the American and British pop charts.
In 2008 Rick was nominated in the class "all time best artist" during the MTV Music Awards. Among the other nominees were Britney Spears, Green Day, U2 and Christina Aquilera.
Rick won the award.
Rick Astley set for Rogafest with full band.
In addition to Astley we also have the pleasure to launch a couple of French goodies that will bring out the dancing feet, including Kaoma who in 1989 had a monsterhit with the song "Lambada", and discovers the gang in Ottawan, best known for songs "Hands up" and "DISCO"

Both bands will be part of a half hour long summer medley that will visit international and national artists.
Other artists that appear at this year's Rogafest De Lillo, Find Kalvik, Di Derre, m.fl
